FREE PCX Viewer

PCX (Personal Computer eXchange) was the native file format for PC Paintbrush and before GIF, JPEG and PNG, was one of the first widely accepted DOS imaging standards. This image file format was developed by ZSoft Corporation of Marietta, Georgia, USA.

PCX is a raster image format, the file header stores metadata about the image, separately from the actual image bitmap. PCX files commonly store palette-indexed images from 2 or 4 colors to 16 and 256 colors.

PCX file is consisted of three main sections:

File header

128 byte header that contains an identifier byte, a version number, image dimensions, a 16 color palette, number color planes and the bit depth of each plane.

Image data

PCX image data is stored in rows or scan lines in top-down order.

Color palette

Optional 256 color palette is added after VGA display hardware was introduced, because PCX file has space in header only for 16 color palette. The solution was to put the palette at the end of the file, along with a marker byte to confirm its existence.

The PCX file format, these days, has mostly been replaced by newer image formats, but is still used by some applications.

CRW file format is Canon RAW format. Canon uses two types of RAW image format, CRW and CR2 file formats. Today, CRW file format is no longer used by Canon because is replaced by CR2 format. TGA file format referred and as TARGA file format, is a raster graphic file format. This was the native format of Truevision Inc’s TARGA and VISTA boards, the first graphic cards for IBM compatible PCs to support Highcolor/Truecolor display. TARGA is an acronym for Truevision Advanced Raster Graphics Adapter; TGA is initialism for Truevision Graphic Adapter. Today, most of the people refer to this format as “TARGA file format”. TGA files have “.tga” extension on PC DOS/Windows systems and Mac OS X. Older Macintosh systems use TPIC type code.

TGA can store image data with 8, 16, 24 and 32 bits of precision per pixel, maximum 24 bits of RGB and extra 8 bits alpha channel. TGA file format originally was defined and specified by AT&T EPICenter in 1984. Their two cards, VDA (Video Display Adapter) and ICB (Image Capture Board) used the first incarnations of the TGA file format.

Even today, with its maximum color depth, TGA is not well suited for high-end pre-press, inventive image processing systems. TGA is still used throughout the animation and video industry because its primary intended outputs are standard TV screens, not color printed pages. Uncompressed 24 bit TGA images are relatively simple compared to several other 24 bit formats. A 24 bit TGA contains only 18 byte header followed by the image data as packed RGB data.
