The PS file extension is associated with Adobe PostScript and is best known as a page description language in electronic and desktop publishing areas. Image saved in PostScript, may contain vector graphics, raster graphics or text and can be printed directly by a PostScript printer without being opened in application.
There are 3 versions of PostScript language:
  • First version was released in 1984
  • Second version (PostScript Level2) was introduced in 1991 and included several improvements in speed and reliability, support for in-RIP separations, image decompression, support for composite fonts, and the form mechanism for caching reusable content.
  • Third version (PostScript 3) was introduced by Adobe at the end of 1997 and came with better color handling and new filters.
